   The grandson of gabrielle d'estrées, duchess de Beaufort, and youngest son of césar de Vendôme, François de Bourbon-Vendôme was one of the leaders of the fronde. His popularity earned him the sobriquet "roi des Halles." Returning to the side of the Crown, he was given the command of a fleet against the Barbary pirates, whom he twice fought (1665). Continuing to fight for France, he was lost during the siege of Candie in the Mediterranean.
